Student Profiles Arriving Daily

Student Profiles Arriving Daily

Yes, it’s that time of year again.  I’m looking for host families for both the upcoming school year, 2012-13, and for short summer stays.  PAX has students from 75 countries, and we are receiving student profiles on a daily basis.  One of the things to be aware of is that your local high school must sign a high school enrollment form and many high schools have limits and deadlines that we need to meet.  Are you interested in hosting?  Send me an email and bring a little world culture to your home.

Will you be a host family?

Will you be a host family?

There are several hosting options– 3-4 weeks during the summer,  5 or 10 months during the school year.  Students come from many countries around the world.  Some want to live and work on local farms, often horse or dairy farms.

Many are here on US State Department scholarships to promote peace and understanding–  http://www.yesprograms.org and  http://exchanges.state.gov/youth/programs/flex.html

I am always happy to answer your questions, email me at:  xchangestudents@gmail.com

1993: Our very first student

The first time we hosted a student was in 1993 when our girls were very young.  We hosted Pablo Orbaiz, who was 14 at the time.  Pablo went to the boys’ soccer practice at McCaskey with my husband who was a volunteer coach and insisted that Pablo was good enough to turn pro.  As it turns out, he was right.  Pablo has been playing pro in Spain for years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Orbaiz He still looks pretty much the same, and it’s very cool to seem him on TV playing against teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Farm Stay students are usually older– college age– from France or Spain, and agree to live with a farm family and work along side the family for 5 hours per day.  Some of these students have a great deal of experience working with horses, in particular, or with farm life.  Others are from cities and want the experience, but will not have any special skills.  We have had some really happy students and farm families the past few years!  Maybe a little romance too.  Hmmm…

Afghanistan?

Afghanistan?

Yes, believe it or not, I have a boy from Afghanistan who needs a host family for the school year 2009-10.  He’s a recipient of the YES Scholarship that the US State Dept awards to students from 35 or so  countries with significant Muslim populations in an effort to build peaceful relations well into the future.

Intro/ Seeking Host Families

Intro/ Seeking Host Families

As much as I’d like to go through my story of hosting exchange students and working with exchange student organizations and the YES Scholarship Program, right this minute, I need to find a host family for a particular YES student– a boy who likes soccer and who appears to be outgoing and friendly. Mmmm…I guess I should say that we’re talking about Lancaster County Pennsylvania, or vicinity. Of course, there are a few other students who need host families for the upcoming school year. And there isn’t much time left. Please email me at XchangeStudents@gmail.com with any interest!
